No iTunes required

How to Transfer iPhone Photos to Windows 10 or 11 Without iTunes

iTunes is not required to get iPhone photos onto Windows. Choose a method based on whether you want to use a cable, share a network, or send to a PC somewhere else.

Quick answer

You do not need iTunes to transfer iPhone photos or videos to a Windows PC. Windows Photos can import from a connected iPhone; iCloud for Windows can download items in your cloud library; and a purpose-built wireless transfer app can send selected files without a cable.

The choice matters because a cloud library, a USB import, and a local wireless transfer do not have the same setup requirements or limitations.

Method 1: Use DropToPC with no iTunes and no USB

DropToPC uses a Windows receiver and an iPhone sender, paired by QR code. It does not require iTunes, an account or cloud photo storage.

  1. Install DropToPC on the iPhone and download the Windows version from the official site.
  2. Open the PC app and scan its QR code using the iPhone app.
  3. Select Send to PC and choose the photos or videos you want to move.
  4. Keep DropToPC open on the iPhone until the transfer shows Sent.
  5. Open the saved Windows copies to check the files before removing anything from your phone.

On a reachable home or office local network, DropToPC transfers directly and quickly. Local-network transfer is free and has no cumulative usage or traffic cap. Its free remote mode also has no cumulative volume or usage cap, though it runs at a lower speed than Pro. Free transfers retain original photo and video quality.

This is especially practical for users who want to send files repeatedly without finding a USB cable.

Method 2: Use Windows Photos without iTunes

For a wired alternative:

  1. Connect your iPhone to Windows using a data-capable USB cable.
  2. Unlock your iPhone and approve the trust prompt if you trust this PC.
  3. Open the Microsoft Photos application and select Import → Connected device.
  4. Choose the files to import and confirm the Windows destination.

Microsoft’s documentation does not require you to use iTunes for this photo import. Apple may recommend the Apple Devices application for supporting communication on Windows, depending on your setup.

If Windows does not detect your phone, check the cable, trust prompt and iCloud-original availability before changing apps. Follow our import troubleshooting guide.

Method 3: Use iCloud for Windows

If your photos already synchronize with iCloud, iCloud for Windows can download them to a PC after signing into the correct Apple Account. That makes it useful for an existing iCloud library.

The trade-off is that you are working with a syncing service. A photo appearing in File Explorer does not always mean the full original is already stored on your PC. Verify an independent backup outside the synchronized folder if the files are important.

Choose by what you need

Need Best starting point
Free, original-quality photos over local Wi-Fi DropToPC
Free remote transfer without cumulative traffic cap DropToPC (lower-speed Free mode)
Wired import without another transfer subscription Windows Photos
Access to a library already stored in iCloud iCloud for Windows
Advanced iPhone data management beyond photos iMazing

A final check

Before you delete phone originals, open a few transferred images and videos, compare resolution, and make a separate backup for irreplaceable memories. A successful progress message means you should verify the copies, not immediately erase the source.

Want a dedicated wireless transfer from iPhone to Windows?

DropToPC uses QR-code pairing and supports Windows 10 and 11. Free transfers preserve original photo and video quality. On a local network, transfers are direct, fast and free with no cumulative volume or usage caps. Across different networks, the free tier still has no cumulative volume or usage cap, but operates at a lower speed than Pro. Pro also adds cross-network automatic backup.
