DropToPC QR Code Not Working? Fix Pairing and Connection Problems

Most first-connection problems are about an expired pairing code, an unavailable Windows receiver, or network permission. Start with the safest checks before changing system settings.

First, try a fresh QR code

DropToPC uses a temporary QR pairing code displayed in its Windows app. If the phone says the code is invalid or expired, generate a fresh QR code on the PC, then scan it using the DropToPC iPhone app.

The official support page recommends this as one of the first connection checks. Do not repeatedly scan an old screenshot: an expired session will not become valid again.

Check that the Windows receiver is ready

  1. Open DropToPC on the Windows PC and keep the application running.
  2. Make sure Windows is online if the iPhone is on a different network.
  3. Display a fresh QR code on the Windows app.
  4. Open the iPhone app and scan it with DropToPC’s own pairing flow.
  5. Wait for the iPhone to show that the PC is ready before tapping Send to PC.

You do not need an iTunes connection or a separate DropToPC account for pairing.

If Windows Firewall blocks the local connection

DropToPC’s official support instructions say that if the Windows application displays Fix Windows Firewall, you can click it and approve the change. This allows the application to request the relevant local-network permission.

Avoid disabling Windows Firewall entirely or opening unknown ports to the internet. If you manage a work or school computer, follow organizational security policy rather than forcing changes.

If iPhone asks for Local Network access

Choose Allow for the trusted DropToPC app so it can attempt a direct local-network connection. If you denied permission previously, you can review the app under Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network.

Apple documents this permission independently from access to your Photos library. The two permissions serve different purposes.

Same network versus different networks

If the phone and PC are on the same reachable home network, DropToPC can transfer directly without routing photo data over the internet. If the phone is on another network, DropToPC’s remote mode uses an end-to-end encrypted internet connection. The Windows receiver still must be available.

The Free tier permits original-quality transfers locally and across networks without a cumulative traffic or transfer-count cap. Remote transfer speed is lower than Pro; a slow Free remote transfer is not the same problem as an invalid QR pairing session.

After pairing, test safely

Send one photo and one short video first. Keep the iPhone app open while manually sending. Confirm the app shows Sent, then open the copied files on Windows. If photos fail to open after a successful transfer, troubleshoot the file type or codec instead of regenerating QR codes.

Want a dedicated wireless transfer from iPhone to Windows?

DropToPC uses QR-code pairing and supports Windows 10 and 11. Free transfers preserve original photo and video quality. On a local network, transfers are direct, fast and free with no cumulative volume or usage caps. Across different networks, the free tier still has no cumulative volume or usage cap, but operates at a lower speed than Pro. Pro also adds cross-network automatic backup.
