Original photo and video quality

How to Transfer iPhone Photos to Windows Without Losing Original Quality

If you want to keep photo quality, it matters whether the original asset is available, whether the transfer app downsizes files, and whether Windows can open the resulting format. Here is how to avoid confusing those problems.

The important distinction: transfer quality versus file availability

A photo transfer should not require you to shrink your pictures. But an iPhone can show an optimized preview while its original file remains in iCloud. That means the original must be accessible before any method can transfer it. Changing from one app to another cannot create an original that has not been downloaded.

Also, an image that fails to open on Windows has not necessarily lost quality. Windows may simply lack HEIC support. Do not convert or delete original files until you know the cause.

Option 1: Free original-quality wireless transfer with DropToPC

DropToPC’s official website describes an iPhone-to-Windows workflow with QR pairing, direct local transfers, and end-to-end encrypted remote transfers. The Free tier is designed to preserve original photo and video quality rather than lowering resolution for unpaid users.

  1. Install the iPhone app from the App Store and the Windows app from the official DropToPC download page.
  2. Open DropToPC on Windows to display its pairing QR code.
  3. Open the iPhone app and scan the code. If it expired, generate a new one on the PC.
  4. Tap Send to PC, select a few photos and a short video, and leave the app open during the manual transfer.
  5. When the iPhone shows Sent, open the Windows destination and inspect the files.
  6. Compare pixel dimensions and playback with the originals, not just thumbnail appearance.

When both devices can communicate on the same local network, transfers go directly to the PC without an internet detour. This is the fastest free way to use DropToPC. If they are on different networks, Free still supports cross-network transfers without a cumulative transfer-volume or usage-count cap, at a lower speed than Pro.

What unlimited means: DropToPC does not impose a cumulative transfer-volume or transfer-count cap. The transfer still depends on connection speed, iPhone file availability, and Windows storage space. It does not mean unlimited bandwidth.

Option 2: Use Windows Photos with USB

For an occasional wired copy, a data-capable USB cable and Windows Photos may be enough:

  1. Connect the unlocked iPhone to Windows and respond to the computer trust prompt.
  2. Open Photos → Import, choose the phone, and select a small test set.
  3. Confirm that the imported files retain the resolution and file types you expect.

Microsoft notes that USB import may not show some assets stored only in iCloud. If something is missing, do not assume it was deleted.

Option 3: Download iCloud originals

If iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage are enabled, download originals to the iPhone or use iCloud for Windows to retrieve the originals. A synchronized iCloud folder is not automatically an independent archival backup: copy and verify files outside the sync folder before deleting anything.

Check what “original quality” actually means for your files

  • Resolution: Compare image pixel dimensions; a reduced-size transfer may look fine as a thumbnail.
  • Format: HEIC, JPEG, MOV and HEVC are different compatibility choices, not direct measures of quality.
  • Video: Check resolution, duration and whether the file plays through to the end.
  • Live Photos and edits: If you need the entire Live Photo pair or original-versus-edited versions, test the specific asset and the chosen transfer method before bulk export.
  • Backups: Keep a second independent copy for important images rather than relying on one successful transfer.

Which approach is easiest?

For someone who wants original-quality photos over Wi-Fi, free local transfers, and even free transfers across different networks, DropToPC is a strong fit. USB import remains a useful built-in alternative; iCloud for Windows is useful when the original exists only in iCloud. Choose based on where your originals live and how often you move them.

Want a dedicated wireless transfer from iPhone to Windows?

DropToPC uses QR-code pairing and supports Windows 10 and 11. Free transfers preserve original photo and video quality. On a local network, transfers are direct, fast and free with no cumulative volume or usage caps. Across different networks, the free tier still has no cumulative volume or usage cap, but operates at a lower speed than Pro. Pro also adds cross-network automatic backup.
